Health & Safety

Health & Safety Waiver

Please that the time to read and understood the Race Waiver before you register for the Amazing Maasai Ultra. Registration implies full acceptance of the Health & Safety Notice.

Eligibility

The race is open to all, including local Laipikia Maasai, athletes of Kenyan and foreign nationality.

Medical Coverage

An ambulance and medical team will be on-hand during race day in case of emergency. There is a clinic & emergency service in the village of DolDol, 10km away, and a better-serviced hospital in town Nanyuki, 65km from the race.

Runners participate in the race at their own risk, and all participants are obliged to obtain primary travel/medical insurance to cover themselves for the duration of their time in Kenya.

Vaccinations

It is important that you consult your doctor in advance of traveling to Kenya, to ensure you have the correct vaccinations (Yellow Fever, Hep. A,Hep.B, Typhoid etc.) For the most up-to-date information on vaccinations, please consult the website for the Center for Disease Control and Preventionsection on traveling in Kenya.

Mosquitoes are not as prevalent at the higher altitudes in Kenya; whether you decide to take Malarone malaria tablets is a personal decision. For those based in China, it is important to note that Malarone tablets are difficult to come-by (available in international hospitals at a premium cost) so please do prepare well in advance if you plan on securing medication.

Personal Safety in Kenya

The risks to your personal safety from the natural environment are minimal, despite the number of wild animals in Kenya. Our travel provider Odyssey Safaris, and the local scouts we employ make it their business to know the local area intimately and to avoid situations that maybe unsafe.

Aside from the wildlife, most people are very friendly towards tourists in Kenya and you'll feel probably be overwhelmed by the Maasai hospitality.

However, we ask that you stay with the group at all times during transit and whenever requested by the Race Directors or other members of the organization team. Also,
be sure not to pack necessary valuables
and remain aware of your surroundings.

Race Safety

The race will be held with safety as a top priority, so please be assured that wildlife and other hazards will not be an issue of concern during your stay. The race itself will be patrolled by experienced, military-trained scouts to track the local wildlife and their movements and ensure participants’ total safety. You will be briefed before Race Day on all related safety matters.

Course Markings

You must stay on course at all times for your own safety and follow the markings. Should you not see course markings for 100 meters. Return to the last one you saw and look for the next trail marks.

Exhaustion Prevention

Exhaustion may reduce your capacity to stay focused, and can even cause disorientation; altitude adds to these effects, so pay attention and do not ignore feelings of disorientation. Always make sure to drink and eat regularly and sufficiently; rest if you feel excessively exhausted.

Emergency

There will be motorcycles and cars traveling between the aid stations on the course to monitor each runner's progress, so accidents or injuries can be dealt with quickly and efficiently.

Should you meet a runner in need of assistance, do supply it as best as is possible and inform the next aid-station. As much as is possible, you will be credited time for your detour or time spent in assistance.

Runners who did not assist in an emergency may be disqualified from the race. Race medical personnel on course and at aid stations are entitled to withdraw you from the race if they sees fit.
